Originally from Edmonton, Steffany Marynovska completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Alberta, where she also studied Ukrainian. She was awarded an Oxford University Press WRITE Prize in her fourth year. After continuing her studies at the University of British Columbia, Steffany went on to work for a marine mammal rescue organization and as a professional parrot keeper. Her first short story was published in The Fiddlehead, having received an honourable mention in their literary contest. After graduating from the Writer’s Studio at Simon Fraser University, she returned to the program as an apprentice under Jen Sookfong Lee. She was later accepted to Jessamine Chan’s novel workshop at Tin House and to Eley Williams’s literary short fiction course, instructed by Camilla Grudova, at the Granta Writers’ Workshop. In 2025, she had a piece shortlisted for the PRISM international Jacob Zilber Prize for Short Fiction. Steffany recently completed a Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing at Humber. She lives in Ottawa by way of Vancouver.
